The woman who invented the chocolate chip cookie was Ruth Wakefield. Wakefield was a chef who was also a college graduate, dietitian, business owner, educator, and author.

Wakefield was a professional dietician and lectured about the right foods to eat. She lived in Massachusetts and in 1930 she and her husband purchased a tourist lodge, the Toll House Inn. Located in between Boston and New Bedford, CT, it was a place where people had traditionally paid a toll, changed horses, and had a hot meal. Ruth cooked and served all the meals. She soon gained local fame for her culinary expertise and people from all over started to visit the Toll House.

She invented the chocolate chip cookie around 1938. It is said that she made the cookie by accident. Ruth expected the chocolate chunks to melt making chocolate cookies but what she got was first Toll House Cookie and the absolute best chocolate chip cookie.

They served the cookies with ice cream and everybody just loved them. The cookie recipe was so popular that hundreds of people would write to her requesting the recipe. So in 1938 she wrote her 1938 best-selling cookbook, Toll House Tried and True Recipes, the absolute best chocolate chip cookie recipe was finally published. The national craze for chocolate chip cookies had begun.  Today Americans consume around 7 billion chocolate chip cookies every year. The United States is by far the world leader in cookie consumption and we will average around 35,000 in our lifetime. But only 50% of those are homemade.

1/12 cups butter

1 1/8 cups sugar

1 1/8 cups brown sugar

3 eggs

1 1/2 teaspoon salt

3 1/8 cups flour

1/2 teaspoon hot water

1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

1 cup of chocolate chips
