What the Heck is High Fructose Corn Syrup?

What Is High-Fructose Corn Syrup?
High fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is a sweetener made from corn. It’s processed from corn starch which is made from long chains of linked sugars. These sugars are then broken down into a syrup of glucose. It’s processed again by adding chemicals that convert some of the glucose into fructose, which is twice as sweet. So manufacturers cut corners and save money by using high fructose corn syrup.
High Fructose corn syrup has higher levels of fructose than regular sugar and the body processes it differently. Regular sugar is easily transported to your cells and utilized as a fuel source immediately. Fructose, on the other hand, has to get converted by the liver first before it can be used for fuel.
According to Dr. Mark Hyman High Fructose Corn Syrup is creating an epidemic of diabetes and obesity. He says the sweetener creates a “fat production factory” in the body. And if you see it on a food label, it is a sure sign of poor quality food you need to avoid.
